After the week she had had, to say Leah needed a break was an understatement. She had just returned from England, a much necessary hiatus from the school seeing as her mother had passed away. She was gone for over a year, leaving behind her friends, acquaintances, and boyfriend behind. She wrote no letters and received none. If she did, she threw them out without opening. Leah had fallen into a deep depression following the death of her mother. Her mother was her best friend and just thought of her no longer being here was saddening. She was grateful the two of them had worked out their issues involving Leah’s poor judgment (she had gotten married at only 16 to a man she barely knew and was widowed only 6 months later) before she had passed. Anyway, Leah couldn’t run away anymore and had to return. She had so many people she needed to explain herself to and she had to play catch up in school if she ever wanted to graduate in time.
Leah had already reached out to her boyfriend, Rue (I suppose if you can still call him that) and had received no reply. A pile of all the letters she sent with her black cat, Lola to him sat in a pile on her desk; another pile of letters she had yet to send sat beside it. Leah sighed at the thought as she wandered the Rue de Paradis. She and Rue used to come here to shop on the weekends a lot when things had been perfect between the two of them. He would by her treats and she would buy him gifts and the two would argue about how they couldn’t accept something from the other without a reason. She laughed silently to herself. They were perfect for one another, Rue and Leah, and she messed it up by leaving and not even communicating with him once during the year she was gone. Granted, yes she was depressed and felt it inappropriate to discuss such things with him in such an informal manner. However, she was wrong in not at least leaving him a letter to explain where she had gone.
All the drama and pain she felt thinking about Rue is what made her finally leave her dormitory and go into town. She had a pocket full of money and was ready for some “retail therapy” as some girls called it. Sometimes a distraction was all she needed to ignore the thoughts of her mind. It was cold today and Leah shivered in her wool peacoat. Her blue eyes spotted the Grub Pub, in the distance, a shady inn with the weirdest bunch of people who stayed their. However, it was the only place in the area she could think of to buy herself a drink to warm up and so she made her way over.
The place was empty for once when she had walked in. Leah was happy, because that meant that no weirdos would be coming up to her trying to talk or anything. She didn’t even see many students hanging around, only a couple in the far corner looking pretty intrigued by the other. Leah frowned. She and Rue used to be like that. Leah shook the thought from her head as the waitress walked to her table to take her order. ”I’ll have a butterbeer. Also, can I have a plate of toast, eggs and bacon? I’m famished,” she told her, and the waitress jotted down her order and walked away. Leah couldn’t remember the last time she had eaten. Her clothes certainly didn’t fit right and she was a lot thinner looking than she had been before. Just thinking about the food made her stomach grumble.
As she waited for her food, more people entered the Pub to seek refuge from the bitter cold. The more men than walked in a noticed her, the more she silently wished for someone she knew to just show up and sit with her so no one would take the free seat. Maybe she should just shove it away from her table and make it look like she was sitting at a table for 1 instead of 2. The waitress returned with her drink and food and Leah thanked her. How pathetic she must have looked right now eating alone.
