From the quick glance Leah suddenly gave him, Charlton surmised he hadn’t disguised the protectiveness in his tone quite as well as he hoped. He smiled ruefully to himself, rubbing his eyes with the back of his hand as he lay across the bridge. It didn’t matter if she knew anyway - it might do her good to realise she had someone on her side for once. As far as he could see, she was doing all the hardwork, picking up all the pieces - but when it came to her turn, there wasn’t a body in sight. Maybe that’s why she ran away. He pondered this for a moment, resolving silently to be a better friend - starting from today. They had always been reasonably close friends, but he’d never made efforts to strengthen their bond mainly because he’d always seen her as primarily Asahria’s friend. He reprimanded himself for being so silly, and resolved that no matter who she remained friends with, Leah deserved to have a better share of his friendship. No matter how romantic the idea of a lone wolf appeared, the reality of it was that every wolf needed a pack to survive.
”At least I’ll have you to protect me if anything goes wrong, you’ll be my body guard and make sure no mean boys mess with me.”
“Damn straight.” He responded lazily, winking at her. He sat up as she shivered, digging in his back pack for his rolled up jumper. There was no point to him actually bringing it, he didn’t get cold anymore…even on the most bitter of days. Old habits die hard though, and he still absently packed a jumper when he went out. Handy when you had slight beautiful blonde friends who felt the chill in the air a little more. Dragging it out, he slung it about her slender shoulders without waiting for the possibility of refusing it. He wasn’t sure how proud she was, but there were girls out there determined to prove they didn’t need anyone…even if that meant refusing a jumper and getting frostbite. Which wasn’t a good look. Particularly when it came down to missing digits. “Here…you’ll need this. It’s starting to get a little breezy up here now. I hear the local does a mean hot chocolate…I‘ll treat ya later if you fancy? ”
”I don’t think I have any friends that quite fit what you’re looking for and, even if I did, I wouldn’t allow you near them you heartbreaker,”
Charlton pulled a face, sticking his tongue out at her. She had a fair point there - and whilst she’d kept it light hearted he knew there was an element of honesty to it. He’d learnt the best way with relationships was to keep them, and his female friends separate. It went one way or the other with girls…and neither way ended up pretty for him. “Yeah yeah…it’s only because you want me all to yourself greedy. I know your game girl.” He drawled mischievously, laughing softly.
She fell silent shortly after and he watched her stare for a moment at the ring on her finger. He hadn’t known her aswell when she was married. It probably wouldn’t have gone down too well if he had, back before Asahria he ‘d had a habit for picking out attached females . Well, the willing ones anyway. He wasn’t particularly her type as far as he knew, and he didn’t think Leah was that type of girl - she was loyal for her own good in his opinion. “What’s it like being married?”
Curiosity overwhelmed him, and he broached the question. She would be welcome to talk about her past if she wanted, but he felt a direct question about her one time husband might be too probing and perhaps open old wounds. This way, she could answer as she pleased. He was genuinely curious about his question…the idea of it still bemused him, finding the idea of being so completely tied down almost suffocating. Perhaps with the right person it would be alright. If you found them. [/blockquote]

Leah let out laugh and shook her head. Did I mention how awesome of a friend Charlton was? She definitely did feel like she finally had someone on her side. He wasn’t willing to beat the living crap out of Rue and make him realize what he had given up in Leah, but he was willing to protect her from getting her heart broken again, and that was more than she could ever imagine. He was a good guy despite the lone wolf façade he was trying to put up. The blonde could see right through those green eyes and see that sometimes being lonely wasn’t something he wanted. Maybe he just pretended being a alone was better because it meant no one could hurt him and he couldn’t hurt anyone. She had once felt that way too until Rue came along…
A jacket wrapped around her little shoulders and she turned int Charlton’s direction as he spoke. Here…you’ll need this. It’s starting to get a little breezy up here now. I hear the local does a mean hot chocolate…I’ll treat ya later if you fancy? She smiled bright, nodding her head. ”That’s so very kind of you, Charlton. Thank you,” she replied. She was shocked to be honest. Such a gentleman towards her and yet his relationship with Asa was the most complicated thing in the world. How could things possibly not work out between the two of them over and over again? It was unfathomable. Her slender hands grabbed the fronts of the jacket, pulling them tighter around her thin frame. Granted, the jacket practically swallowed her whole, but the tighter she wrapped it, the warmer she felt.
Yeah yeah…it’s only because you want me all to yourself greedy. I know your game girl
She laughed again, shaking her head and sticking her own tongue out of her friend. ”THAT’S NOT WHAT I’M SAYING AT ALL! I merely saying that I don’t want you to hurt any of my friends with your bad boy attitude and heartbreaker status. My friends are a lot like me: they fall for the bad boys,” she explained, nudging him with her shoulder again. This was nice; in under an hour or so, she felt like she had grown closer to Charlton and the two of them were getting to know each other better in the process. She had known Charlton for as long as she knew Asa but the two never really were alone together. Double dates, third-wheel dates, those were the types of things Leah used to see Charlton for. His sneaky return to school had prompted a run in by the bridge of all places and she couldn’t believe they had been sitting here all this time talking. It was certainly a welcoming change and, if anything, he opened her eyes to just how awful of a person Rue was being to her right now.
What’s it like being married?
The question snapped her out of her thoughts and she looked over at him. She smiled and her eyes flickered back to her ring. ”When it’s with the right person, it’s the most beautiful thing you can imagine,”
she told him, smiling again and looking over at her friend once more. ”You know, I was 16 when I married Daniel and everyone thought I was utterly insane for ‘throwing my life away’. My parents disowned me; I lost a lot of friends. But you know what? I wouldn’t change it for the world. Even with the way it ended, it was the best year of my life spent with the best guy I have ever known,” she told him. It brought a small tear to her eyes and she quickly wiped it away. ”Maybe it will happen again for me one day and maybe not. Maybe it will even happen for you,” she told Charlton, poking a slender finger into his rib cage. Charlton couldn’t understand why Rue had abandoned Leah. He really couldn’t get it. He supposed it was only the way some would look on his relationship with Asahria - from the outside it was always less complicated. He had initially been a little wary about coming back, wondering if things had changed, or if people would be judgemental. Particularly mutual friends he’d had with Asahria. Unfortunately, many of the old crowd who would have given him what for, like Holden & Nathanial, weren’t around anymore. Was he destined to live out his werewolf life as an eternal student or would he find his purpose in life? He’d once thought he’d found it in Asahria. That was before though. His bumping into Leah had been unexpected, and admittedly another thing he’d been wary of, but now she’d given him a purpose to be back here. He was glad he’d stayed to talk to her - and whilst he might not have reeled off a list of the downfalls in his life, just having Leah there was enough and a massive support.
”THAT’S NOT WHAT I’M SAYING AT ALL! I merely saying that I don’t want you to hurt any of my friends with your bad boy attitude and heartbreaker status. My friends are a lot like me: they fall for the bad boys,”
Leah nudged him with her shoulder, though he could see the amusement in her blue eyes. He grinned before feigning surprise. He widened his big green eyes and shouldered her gently back. “Look at this face Leah…go on, look at it….does this look like the face of a ‘bad’ boy heatbreaker?” He laughed then and settled back, leaning on the bridge.
”When it’s with the right person, it’s the most beautiful thing you can imagine, You know, I was 16 when I married Daniel and everyone thought I was utterly insane for ‘throwing my life away’. My parents disowned me; I lost a lot of friends. But you know what? I wouldn’t change it for the world. Even with the way it ended, it was the best year of my life spent with the best guy I have ever known, Maybe it will happen again for me one day and maybe not. Maybe it will even happen for you,”
“Hah…yeah, and pigs might fly.“ He snorted. “Besides, I don’t think anyone would have me.“ Charlton joked, he dropped his gaze, looking into his hands for a long moment. There had only ever been one person he had been able to contemplate spending a whole lot of life with. And he didn’t have her anymore. He could deal with just being friends with girls, he was good at that. He could deal with only spending the night with them, or leaving apologetically in the morning. But he’d never been very good at having a steady relationship. Perhaps it was ‘mummy issues’, his mother having left when he was only two - or just family issues in general. Despite what people led you to believe, Charlton hadn’t found his family to be the most loving, or reliable. He liked to be able to attach to people without really being attached…but a girlfriend…a wife…that was asking for trouble. Glashtyn men weren’t made for marriage. He only had to look at his parents to tell you that. The way Leah talked about it though, it almost made him wish he could have. “How do you know if it’s the right person though…I mean, yeah for that time, but how do you know when it’s forever?”
[[SO sorry, this isn't my best post but I wanted to get one up for you >.<]]
