What is so important about tiki torches?
Name: Mary Harris-Chevalier
Position: Defense Against the Dark Arts professor
Blood Purity: Mixed
Gender: Female
Age: 27
Patronus: Red Squirrel
Amortentia 'smell': a mix of Steak & Kidney Pie, Mashed Potato, Gravy, Yorkshire Puddings and some hot treacle tart & custard
Orientation: Bisexual
Appearance:
Mary has a pale complexion typical of Anglo-Saxons - she would fit the ideal of blue eyes and blonde hair if it wasn't for being born with a genetic condition called heterochromia iridum, causing her left eye to be blue and her right eye to be green.
She likes her hair being long and brushes it daily so she doesn't have to tie it back.
Mary's normal choice of colors is light blue or black. In her clothing, she always carries one or more pouches that have had Undetectable Extension Charms cast - something that is of no difficulty for her.
Familiar:
Mary's familiar is a male grey magical cat from an American magical animal seller friend, which Mary named Ralph after a character in a childhood story she liked.
Ralph loves exploring, catching mice and snuggling up in his bed. He has a friendly disposition.
Wand:
Mary's wand, which she has had since her early schooling days, is made of Mahogany with an English Holly handle, and in style B. It is 10" long and has a unicorn hair core.
The wand is pliable and has an engraving of her initials ('MHC') along with a small Union Jack symbol, reminding her of her british heritage.
She keeps it in a blue silk scabbard at her side normally and stores it in an oak box lined with red velvet at night - next to her bed though so she can get to it if needed.
Personality:
Mary has a fondness for Cossu students as it was her own house when she studied at Beauxbatons Academy of Magic, and helps out when she can. She is more likely to give them points or ignore transgressions that would cause the loss of points - and has no problems with the bias as she knows other teachers do as well even without thinking.
Mary is bisexual, and has dated both men & women. Her first relationship with another female was back at Hogwarts, and still has fond memories of that time. She nearly got married once to a wonderful male Auror during her time working there, but he was killed in combat before the wedding. However, she believes that she has left enough time to move on and is looking for someone else.
Outside of class, she has numerous interests in the field of magic and non-magical, as Mary believes in a well-rounded education. Mary has learnt to play the violin and is an accomplished painter - refusing to cheat with magic and does it the muggle way. She can speak English, French and Welsh. Since leaving school, she has learnt Gobbledegook, Centaur and Mermish.
Mary has studied hard and showed a natural talent for defensive magic against the Dark Arts. She has extensive experience as an Auror with a specialty of tracking down the most elusive dark wizards and concealment. However, she is looking for a different life after seeing more then a few colleagues lose limbs or worse against dark magic and feels that maybe, a change of profession might suit her better.
As a teacher, she believes that her job is to help students learn rather then enforcing absolute discipline in a tyrannical manner. Consequently, her classes can tend to be 'chaotic' in a semi-controlled way. That being said, she also understands that what she teaches can be dangerous at times and knows that she needs to keep a lid on the chaos at times.
Mary has a quirky sense of humor, and delights in jokes & practical jokes. She is more likely to let things go if it is amusing or funny & no one got hurt.
Mary will not stand for bullying or cruel & vindictive actions in her classroom. She prefers to use defensive magic and/or magic that stops the activity in a non-damaging way - for example a shield charm or removal of a wand.
Mary also has a friendly nature and willingness to make sure that all students that pass through her classroom doors will be as prepared as possible for whatever they do in future. She is very willing to provide private lessons and tutoring to students who struggle in their lessons.
Mary believes that all wizards are just as important, and has no paitence for those who believe in blood-status as important or something to use to limit magic use. Both sides of her family has long ago lost the ability to really tell when or where they got magic from, only being able to class themselves as 'Mixed' which she is proud of.
She also believes that 'Beings' are just as important as wizards and muggles, and refuses to keep any House Elves of her own. In the past, she has also defended House Elf and Goblin welfare.
Mary is an avid Quidditch follower, and her team is the Holyhead Harpies. She also enjoys swimming, rowing and hiking.

Personal History:
In 1984, an English magical history researcher, Alfred Harris, and a French Auror, Christelle Chevalier, met during an international magical conference being held in Paris. Alfred was presenting some research while Christelle was part of the protection for various dignitaries of the French Ministry of Magic. Alfred was smitten and tried all manner of things to convince Christelle to go on a date with him, before she eventually accepted. Over a few months, Alfred and Christelle became close, and eventually married. Christelle transferred in a liaison capacity to the British Ministry of Magic, working sometimes with the British Aurors.
They moved to the town of Taunton in the region of England known as Somerset, and two years later, Alfred and Christelle Harris became parents of a beautiful young girl, who they named Mary.
Mary had a wonderful early childhood in Taunton, with regular trips to London and Paris with her parents. As a child, Mary grew up learning both English and French, speaking both fluently. Around the age of four, her father became interested in Welsh magic and moved the family home to Swansea. Being of a young age, Mary began picking up Welsh as another language.
However, when she was nine, her father was tragically killed in a mine collapse while he was doing research on early Welsh magical use at Great Orme Copper Mines in Bronze Age Wales.
Christelle and Mary stayed in Somerset and when Mary was nearly eleven on a holiday trip to Paris with her mother to see her mother's parents, she received a letter of acceptance to go to the beloved magical school that her father had told her stories of - Hogwarts. Mary was absolutely ecstatic and her mother took her to a boutique French wand shop, Enchanted Wands. Once there, the wand shop owner helped Mary select a wand that suited her - mahogany wood in style B with an English Holly handle, unicorn hair core, 10" and pliable. Her mother also paid for a brown leather wand scabbard engraving Mary's initials (MHC) on it plus a small Union Jack to remind her of her father. Her mother also got her a male magical orange cat from an American magical animal seller friend, which Mary named Ralph after a character in a childhood story she liked.
She studied there for three years in Ravenclaw house, including on the Ravenclaw Quidditch team, and had a number of relationships with other students of both genders. However, eventually, it became necessary for her mother to move back to France permanently to help care for Christelle's parents, after Christelle's father became affected by dementia that couldn't be cured by magic or muggle medicine. Christelle re-transferred back to the Auror section and moved into a villa in central Marseilles that was owned by Christelle's parents. Christelle visited the school to talk to Mary and was pleased when Mary wanted to come with her, even if it was to a new school.
Christelle contacted Madame Maxine at Beauxbatons Academy of Magic, who gave permission for a permanent transfer at the end of Mary's third year at Hogwarts. Mary began studying at Beauxbatons, being sorted into her mother's alma mater house, Cossu, and did quite well in her studies - eventually getting Outstanding NEWT's in Defense Against the Dark Arts, Herbology, Transfiguration, Divination, Charms and Potions & Exceeds Expectations in Dark Arts, History of Magic and Astronomy. Ralph particularly liked the new school, as the climate suited him better.
Once graduating from Beauxbatons, she pleased her mother when she applied to the French Ministry of Magic to become an Auror herself and was accepted in. She began the three years of training, and after completing it with high marks, she joined her mother as an Auror. Mary met and dated a male Auror for awhile, before he was tragically killed during combat with dark wizards.
Six years later, her mother retired and Mary has decided to move on too, applying and being accepted to the role of Defense Against The Dark Arts teacher at Beauxbatons Academy of Magic. As a teacher, she is determined to do her best. Her normal style of clothing is black satin rather then blue silk as normal - although she does wear the school color's at formal occasions. Ralph has come with her to the school, and has delighted in returning to his old stomping grounds.
