It had to be the most beautiful day out, Katniss thought as she looked up at the clouds from the ground. She had been on her back on the ground for most of the morning. She woke with the sun most days and when people weren't up yet, Katniss often went outside to enjoy the view and the quiet atmosphere. It wasn't so much the case in the winter since the days were shorter than the nights, but summer meant longer days and Katniss loved spring. Autumn was probably her second favorite season because of all the beautiful colors, but that meant the plants were dying and would look dead for another three months or so. Katniss loved everything about nature though, so it wasn't a big deal since she knew it would come back in the spring again. Katniss had her legs crossed since she had a skirt on. She sat up and crossed her legs pretzel style. She just had to make sure her skirt was long enough to cover herself. The sun had risen and Katniss looked down at her wrist watch. It was already ten o'clock in the morning. She had been out in the gardens since at least seven in the morning.
She should have brought something to do. She usually brought her notepad down to sketch out some really bad drawings of the nature around her, but this time she just wanted to stare at the sky and think. She didn't get much time to herself back home with her pesky little brothers always running around the house and causing all sorts of chaos. It was quiet here and Katniss liked that about Beauxbatons. Sure she was still trying to get the hang of magic and all, but the castle was so majestic that Katniss knew that she never wanted to leave it. Katniss watched some ants crawl around her as she picked at her nails. People were bound to be up by now and Katniss wondered if she should go get something to eat. She still wasn't sure how long people were allowed to eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner and figured that she might as well get there as soon as it opened and see for herself.

Amanda woke up later than usual. She didn't know why this was. She never woke up at nine. Usually. On a normal day she woke up at seven. She looked around at her room. Her roommates Lily and Alice were still asleep. So were all of their pets. The three girls practically had a zoo in their room! There were two owls, two pygmy puffs, a cat, and a dog. Lily and Amanda were animagi, so that sometimes added an extra cat and deer.
Amanda realized that there was nothing to do. Everyone was asleep, and it was too early for breakfast. So Amanda got changed into jeans and a blue sweater. She combed out her brown curls. They wouldn't go straight. She likes her hair, of course, but sometimes she wants to try something new. Alice and Lily were lucky. They were matamorphmagi, and could change their appearance at will.
Amanda went outside and down to the gardens. It was 10:00 when she saw an older girl lying on the ground. She approached the girl. "Hello" she said.

Katniss bit her lip as she tried to decide what to do. She wasn't quite hungry yet, but if she arrived at the Great Hall now, there wouldn't be many people there to see her sitting by herself. She had no friends to talk to yet and as much as she loved her new life here, it was still just Katniss by herself. She had been so independent all her life that it was hard to go out and just talk to random strangers. She always hoped people would come up to her and make the first move since Katniss was way too shy to just walk up to someone and strike up a conversation with them. She could barely hold a conversation let alone start one. Yes, it would be best if she just went now to save herself the embarrassment of people staring at her. She knew there were probably some really outgoing and extroverted people that might walk up to Katniss, but nobody had yet and she didn't want to take the chance in settling into the stereotype of being the girl that was always alone when they ate.
While she was still in her decision making mode, she saw a small girl come towards the captivating gardens. Katniss could see the girl's face as she grew nearer and her facial structures made her look a bit younger than Katniss. Katniss was a bit on the short side herself, but she hated it when people thought she was younger than sixteen. Katniss always made sure to look at the face structure. Older students tended to have a less rounded face as they grew into the body they would have for most of their life. Katniss knew she was done growing and would be this height forever. It bummed her out a bit since he might have people thinking she's younger than she really is for the rest of her life. Although, adults seemed to like it when others thought they were younger than they really were so maybe it wouldn't all that bad when she got older.
The little girl had gotten close enough to Katniss to greet her and Katniss gave her a small smile back in return. "Hullo." Katniss managed and then looked down again at her hands in her lap. Katniss took another quick peek at the girl and saw that she had brown hair and was wearing a lot of blue. Katniss could feel pieces of her hair turning a light pink from her shyness and tried to control her ability. It was always embarrassing when people tried to talk to her about it. Katniss tried to cover it up and tell people they were imagining it, but this was a place for magical people like Katniss that were probably used to much more and weirder unlike the people wizards call Muggles.
