The weather was very nice out and Tyler was very happy to be taking advantage of the day. The sun shot a nice light down onto the grounds and he felt like it was a good idea to read outside for a change. Thank goodness it wasn't going to rain. He made sure he had everything he needed in his bag - books, quills, ink and some snacks from the kitchens - and then set off. He walked outside with a light t-shirt on and some dark denim jeans.
He ran a hand over some bark and felt how rough it was under his fingertips. Once he made it close enough to the shadows of the trees, he sat down and got comfortable in the shade. It was warm out, so he felt a little foolish for wearing jeans in the first place. Regardless, he was going to enjoy himself. He brought out his book, a nice old first edition he had swiped from his mother's library at home, and began to flip through the pages, searching for his bookmark which seemed to have slip inside - hidden from view.
Once he found his place, he began to slip into the mysterious world. Somehow, he managed to tune out all the fuss around him and was rather enjoying himself in his peace and quiet. He took a moment from the story and looked up and around him, noticing that more students had come out onto the grounds. He ran a hand through his hair and leaned his head back against the trunk of a tree. He froze at the sight of a large spider coming down from the tree above him. He quickly scrambled out of the way, letting out a quick "Argh!" and shoving himself away from the tree.
He shuddered as he grabbed his bag and walked back out into the open sunlight. He absolutely hated spiders. Shuddering once again to himself, he barely noticed he shoved into someone, nearly knocking them over in his haste to escape the creature. "I'm sorry," he mumbled, turning around to check and see if that person was alright.

Gwen wandered around the castle, trying to get accustomed to the place. She couldn't deny that she made the right choice in attending the school. The one thing that unnerved her was the size. It probably wouldn't take her a long time to get lost. She got lost in St Mungo's the first few times she stayed there. She was pretty sure the castle was a lot larger than the hospital which increased her chances. All she wanted right now was to read the book that she had in her hand. She thought that when she was looking for a place to read a book, she could get explore the school a little. She hadn't originally planned on attending a magic school. She actually didn't want to. She believed that it was enough when her mother taught her some spells.
Magic wasn't always a friend to her. She could still remember reading about Arthurian legends and wanted to be able to use magic like Merlin. She changed her thoughts after her father left because she was a witch and so was her mother. She ran a hand through her light brown curls. She always wondered what life would've been like if her father stayed. During her stays at St Mungo's, she often met people who had a Muggle as a parent but they never abandoned their child. It was a case that didn't occur too often. As time went on Muggles just became more open-minded. They put away the torches and cut the stake. If their spouse was a witch or wizard then so be it. She didn't know why the chance of having a father had to be taken away from her.
She pushed those thoughts away from her mind and let them settle on another. Her book came into mind. It was a Muggle one, of course since she spent a lot of her time in London. It was called Pride and Prejudice. The novel was just enchanting to her. She absolutely adored how Elizabeth stood her ground even if her initial impression of Darcy was wrong. Gwen just couldn't help but read it again. Consumed in her thoughts, she hadn't been watching where she was going because a someone eventually crashed into her.
She fell but saw that she remained unharmed since it wasn't a bad fall. "It's fine. I wasn't exactly watching where I was going either," she assured the person. She bent down to pick up her book. Gwen looked up and noticed that the person was a boy. Awkwardness filled her. She never really had much interaction with one and the stories that her friends told her unnerved her a little. Well, it wasn't like they weren't human. The thought assured her and she brushed away the tales of her friends. "I'm Guinevere Vymont but you can call me Gwen instead. So, what's your name?" she asked him in an attempt to start a conversation.

Tyler had never been good with girls. All they did was make him feel uncomfortable and awkward. Kind of like a ball of butterflies had been dumped square in his stomach. They managed to make him all uneasy as though he would say something he would regret in front of them. His parents had always made him feel as though he should be more of a man towards women, being kind to them and always listening to what they had to say. There was so many rules surrounding women he didn't know what to do when he actually encountered one. And it was very rare that he did. For whatever reason, Beauxbatons had lots of girls so Tyler didn't really know how to control himself when it came to manners and just being himself. He felt that whenever there was a girl around, he should be more polite with them since he didn't want to make them unhappy.
An unhappy girl was never a good idea. He blushed a little bit because this girl was particularly pretty. "Um..." he mumbled, not sure how to start. Talking to girls was one thing, but normally he left almost immediately. He kind of wanted to run away because he felt so awkward around her, but instead he sucked in a deep breath of air and quickly spurted out the following words: "My name is Tyler Emmerick it's really nice to meet you and I'm really sorry also what are you reading?" It was like one really big run-on sentence. He heaved a great sigh as he sucked in some air to breathe again, his ears turning bright red.
"Um," he repeated, "Sorry. I mean... um. I'm Tyler. Emmerick. Tyler Emmerick. It's nice to meet you Guineve - er... Gwen." He had always struggled when it came to making friends so hopefully he would get the hang of it eventually. Talking to Gwen was a start. Maybe getting to make a friend by the end of the day would be better. But she was so pretty he was kind of getting distracted by her. Trying to break the awkward silence, he rubbed the back of his neck, suddenly incredibly hot, "Er, what book are you reading?"

She could just feel the awkwardness in the air. She noticed that the boy who had crashed into her was looking a little nervous. She played with the skirt of her dress as she thought of what to say. She chanced a glance at the boy and saw that he was bit more tense than she was. "You know, you don't have to be nervous talking to me," she said, offering a small smile. A confused expression crossed her face when she heard what the boy said. It sounded all mixed together and she didn't understand one word. "I'm sorry. What did you say?" she asked him. She giggled when he repeated his sentence. "So, that's what you meant," she said with a smile. A goal was now set in her mind. She was determined to not make this conversation be an awkward one.
"It's nice to meet you too, Tyler," she said happily. She showed Tyler her book. "It's called Pride and Prejudice," she said. She wondered if he heard about the book since it was well known. Well, it was among Muggles. She wasn't so sure about wizards. She knew they wrote books, of course. She didn't know if they took interest in Muggle literature. She noticed that some wizards acted as if they were superior to everyone. These were what people called purebloods. They had absolutely no drop of Muggle blood in their veins and felt their need to lord it over people. She sincerely hoped that Tyler wasn't one. She felt that she would really like the boy once she got to know him.
A rather awkward silence filled the air. "Are you new here? she asked curiously. Gwen hadn't been here long. She arrived at the academy just a couple of weeks ago so she barely knew anyone. This was pretty much a milestone for her. Tyler was the first boy that she talked to since she arrived at Beauxbatons. Another question popped into her mind. "What house are you in, Tyler" she questioned him. Neither of them were in uniforms so it was hard to tell. She heard a bit about the houses. From what she gathered, Cossu students were some of the artistic and creative students. The people who were in Sournois house weren't exactly the nicest from what the people told her. She herself fell in with the Rouerie students. She was bookish when she wanted to be. Overall, the main reason of why she was sorted there was probably because of her curiosity.

Tyler shuffled back and forth awkwardly in place as she spoke. Did he really have to be nervous? Not really, he just sort of was. He offered her a sort of half smile, not really sure how he should react to something like that. But despite how he felt, she was managing to make him feel a little more at ease into the conversation. He fiddled with the strap of his bag as she spoke again. Her voice was nice and soft, it kept him calm and seemed to serenade him into some sort of false sense of security, as though all of a sudden she would surprise him and make him fear women forever. He glanced down at her book cover as she mentioned the name of the book. It struck his memory as something he may have seen in the past. Being a muggle born, he knew the book (and the movie) but he hadn't read it. "I didn't think witches read muggle books," he blurted out accidentally. He hadn't really meant to just speak, it just sort of happened. He hoped she didn't take it badly, so he added quickly, "Not that there's anything wrong with that. I just thought wizards had other authors and... stuff." he flushed once again, this time his cheeks turning a bright red.
Tyler nodded in response to the question of his time at Beauxbatons. He was new, only just arriving a few days prior. He liked the school but sometimes people scared him and since everything here was new and suddenly people lighting things on fire in corridors and making things fly that weren't supposed to were normal. He wasn't sure how he felt about that just yet. Maybe he would grow to get used to it. In the meantime, it was something that set him off inside so perhaps he'd be more comfortable with the idea later on.
"I'm in Sournois house. It's weird, everyone there seems a little... off." he shrugged, unsure how to describe them. He didn't know much about the different houses and why one was different from the other, but he knew he sort of fit in there in the sense that he was a little darker than most people. His childhood, although happy, had left him feeling kind of bland and boring and empty. Something he wanted to change with the hope of magic. All along he felt as though something was missing from his life and perhaps magic was there to fill the void. Who knows. "What house are you in, Gwen?" he asked, struggling to make a coherent sentence. Still, her beauty somewhat distracted him and he half wondered if she was part... whatever that beautiful creature thing was. Velda? Veels? Something like that. The word he was searching for was Veela because she was so beautiful to him. Kind of like an angel, but he couldn't quite comprehend those feelings and put them into words. So they currently made no sense to him.

Despite her best attempts of easing the situation, Tyler still looked on edge. She should probably just let destiny take its course. She didn't actually believe in destiny but she should probably just go with the flow. As she watched the boy fidget before her, she noticed that he looked kind of cute. He wasn't over the top good-looking that all her friends would squeal over. He was still attractive to her. Tyler also seemed like a really nice person. He was the type of person that she could be friends with. She giggled at his response to her choice of books. "Some witches read Muggle books," she commented. "I'm a halfblood so I know about the books," she explained. He must have been a Muggle-born. If he was raised in the magical community, he would've known that. She was also a bit new to magic. Well, new to using it. She occasionally worked at St Mungo's so she saw some bizarre things. Her mother had tried to teach her magic but she didn't have enough time.
She smiled when Tyler nodded in response to her question. "That's great! Well, you might not think so. I'm new here too!" she chattered on excitedly. She blushed a little, her cheeks turning a light red color. She must have looked like some talkative twit. Gwen calmed herself down. At least she wasn't the only new kid. An idea popped into her head and she was eager to share it. "We could explore the school together!" she suggested happily. She began to realize that Tyler probably wouldn't like that idea since he seemed so uncomfortable around her. "Well, only if you want to," she added quickly, feeling a lot more embarrassed. She honestly wondered how she could act so silly sometimes but she guessed that's what came with being herself. She had always been an easily excitable child much to her mother's fear. Sometimes, Gwen worked herself up too much. This would cause her to get sick and drive her mother to her wit's end.
Gwen didn't have the best health due to being born premature but she managed. She just had to be careful to not exert herself too much. Her eyes widened in shock. He was probably joking. There was no way that he could be a Sournois student. He seemed so nice while the Sournois students seemed a bit mean for the lack of a better word. Her mother was a Beauxbatons alumnus so she knew all about the houses. Her mother had been in Rouerie so she was happy that she was sorted into the same house. She blushed when she realized she was acting rude. "Sorry," she apologized. She thought about her next words. This wasn't something that she always did. She was the type of person who acted on instinct and not on thoughts. "It's just that you seem so nice while some of the students in that house seem a little rude," she explained tentatively. "I'm sorry if that offends you," she said softly. She looked back up when Tyler asked her a question. "I'm in Rouerie," she answered.
